How long your Buttz underwear lasts depends largely on how you wash it. Improper care can quickly cause even the best underwear to lose elasticity, color, and shape.

What temperature should I wash underwear at?
For light to medium soiling, 30°C is perfectly sufficient – even for underwear. Modern detergents contain enzymes that effectively remove bacteria and dirt, even at low temperatures. 30°C is the gentlest option for the fibers of our high-elastic underwear.
Important: Always choose a full wash cycle (e.g., delicate cycle), not a short cycle. The mechanical action is crucial for physically removing dirt particles and microorganisms from the fabric. A laundry bag provides additional protection against friction.
Exception: Period Keeper. We recommend washing the Period Keeper at 40°C. Rinse blood out briefly with cold water by hand before washing, then immediately put the underwear in the washing machine – this prevents bacteria from multiplying.
The right detergent for underwear
The most important rule: use only liquid detergent. No powder, no pods. Powder detergents and pods often contain bleach or alcohol, which can fade colors and, more importantly, dissolve the adhesive in seamless high-elastic underwear and period keepers.
Colored underwear: use liquid detergent for colored underwear, wash only with other colored items.
Black underwear: use liquid detergent for all colors, wash only with dark laundry.
White underwear: use liquid detergent for all colors, wash only with white laundry.
Sensitive skin: use sensitive detergent.
Fabric softener for underwear: a definite no.
Fabric softener sounds like it's gentle on your skin, but it isn't – at least not for underwear. The consequences:
Fibers stick together, creating ideal conditions for bacteria and fungi.
Absorbency is lost – especially problematic for modal products and the Period Keeper.
Elastane loses its elasticity – high-elastic fabrics deteriorate.
No fabric softener. Period.
Hand washing: only in emergencies.
When traveling or in a hurry: hand washing is possible, but not ideal. Clean the crotch area (cotton gusset) with a small dab of regular detergent. The washing machine does a more thorough job.
Tumble dryer: best avoided.
The dryer puts stress on the fibers. Underwear doesn't shrink, but with regular tumble drying, it loses elasticity and vibrancy much faster. Air drying is always better.
Ironing: not necessary.
Buttz underwear doesn't wrinkle. Just shake it out after washing – done. No iron needed.
