What is a gusset?
The gusset is the fabric insert in the crotch area of underwear. It usually consists of cotton or a cotton blend and has three main functions: breathability, hygiene, and comfort. A well-made gusset absorbs moisture, protects the intimate area, and prevents chafing.
The problem with inexpensive underwear
For many manufacturers, the gusset is extremely narrow – often more decorative than functional. This has concrete consequences:
- Little absorbency for discharge or sweat
- No additional comfort in everyday life
- Chafing that becomes painful over time
- Faster moisture build-up and unpleasant odors
Especially with seamless underwear, this is often scrimped on – while the outer material is smooth and stretchy, synthetic material is still directly on the most sensitive body area.
Why the gusset is crucial there
The intimate area is sensitive. It needs breathable materials, adequate protection, and good moisture regulation. Women who sweat a lot or have regular discharge – which is completely normal – immediately notice whether the gusset does its job or not.
A gusset that is too narrow or poorly made can lead to skin irritations, infections, and persistent discomfort. This is not a detail that should be ignored.
The Buttz gusset: Wide, absorbent, cotton-lined
All High Elastics and the Tangster have a wide, functional gusset made of breathable cotton (95% cotton, 5% elastane). It is wide enough to really cover the area, absorbent without being bulky, and soft enough for all-day wear.
The outer material of the High Elastics is nylon – smooth, stretchy, invisible under clothing. But cotton sits directly against the body. This is no coincidence, but a design decision.

Cotton is breathable, moisture-regulating, and skin-friendly. Especially in the crotch area, which is particularly sensitive, cotton is the most suitable material. Synthetic fabrics can impair moisture regulation and promote irritation.
What is a good gusset in underwear?
A good gusset is wide enough to completely cover the intimate area, consists of at least 90% cotton, is absorbent without being bulky, and does not cause chafing. At Buttz, the gusset consists of 95% cotton and 5% elastane.
