What is elastane?
Elastane, also known as spandex, is a synthetic polymer that is used in our underwear for its exceptional elasticity and shape retention. This material can stretch up to 500% of its original length without losing its shape. These unique properties make elastane so valuable in material blends, especially in our High Elastics model. With their 20% elastane content, they are super stretchy.

Warning, this is about to get a little complicated: The basic building block for elastane is usually the macromolecule polyurethane, which is formed by a chemical reaction of diisocyanates and diols. In a complex process, these starting materials are linked together, creating a highly elastic material. The key to elastane's impressive stretchability lies in the cross-linking of these molecular chains, which allows the material to stretch considerably without losing its shape.
After synthesis, the elastane is spun into fibers, which are then mixed with other fibers, such as modal, to create a versatile material blend.
What are the advantages of elastane?
Elastane has some outstanding properties, which is why we use the material in all our underwear:
- exceptional elasticity: This allows for the production of garments that perfectly adapt to the body's shape without losing their form.
- high stretchability: This improves the freedom of movement and flexibility of the fabric. Especially with close-fitting underwear, this is a real win.
- strong shape retention: Even after frequent wear and washing, the fabric retains its shape.
Mixing elastane with other materials, such as cotton or polyester, gives fabrics additional durability and comfort. Overall, the combination of elasticity, shape retention, and versatility makes elastane an indispensable component in comfortable underwear.
What are the disadvantages of elastane?
Although elastane offers many positive properties, there are also some potential disadvantages: A major aspect is the environmental impact of elastane production. The production process requires the use of petrochemical raw materials, which can lead to a negative ecological footprint.
In addition, unlike natural fibers such as cotton, elastane is not biodegradable, which can contribute to environmental problems in the long term.
Since there is currently no proven alternative to elastane in material blends, we continue to use it in our underwear. However, we keep our ears and eyes open for innovative alternatives. If you have any suggestions for us, please send us an email.
Do you sweat more in elastane?
No, elastane itself does not contribute to sweating in underwear. If you sweat in underwear with elastane content, then it's best to look at the other components of the panty.
Materials such as polyester, acrylic, or nylon can affect the breathability of the fabric. If you tend to sweat easily, especially in summer, or if you don't like the feel of synthetic underwear, we recommend underwear with a high cotton or modal content.
